I know exactly how you feel. I still haven't come to terms with the fact that he is actually dead. You'd think since we didn't know him in real life that it wouldn't matter, but it really upset me. He was only seven years older than us. How weird is that?
He was the first actor I had a girly teenage crush on too (thanks to 10 Things I Hate About You, natch) and that crush sort of developed into a sort of...I dunno, not a crush but just a general admiration. I liked him and, like you said, felt like I kinda knew him on some weird level instead of just being smitten by his looks. Come to think of it, I think the only movies I've seen him in are 10 Things and Brokeback Mountain, but those are two good movies and he was good in both and I just....liked him. Sad day :(
A Knight's Tale, The Patriot, and The Brothers Grimm are my favorite movies with him in them. However, I too am sad seeing as how he could have kept his role of the Joker in the third announced Batman movie. Now the third movie may suffer. It is a sad day. I think mainly because you didn't see it coming. Britney Spears or someone like that would not be a shock.
