Fun nuggets from the past week:
Brian and I celebrated our 3-year anniversary (!) last Sunday with a mix of high, low, and medium culture:
High: We attended the "Symphonies in C" program from the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, the second of this year's four concerts in the ASO's Montevallo Series. This series has only been going on since last year, and both years we've been lucky enough to have a concert fall on our anniversary--pretty nifty, no? This was actually exceptionally cool because we were about 2 minutes late--and so some concert guys snuck us into the very quiet, uncrowded balcony area, where we could see the whole orchestra without the annoyance of hearing an entire audience shifting in their seats every few minutes. They played Sibelius's Symphony No. 7 in C (brief--not even a multimovement work--but incredible) and Schumann's Symphony No. 2 in C (enjoyable, though it wasn't quite as exciting as I'd hoped).
Low: We followed our intellectually stimulating concert with something to sufficiently satisfy our brains' baser entertainment needs: a trip to the movies to see Zack and Miri Make a Porno. I've been excited about this movie for awhile, and was even more anxious to see it after I found out it was a Kevin Smith movie. I loved it, but it's definitely not for everyone. If you're a fan of Kevin Smith, you'll dig it; if you're turned off by crude humor and nudity, you won't. (Brian and I, along with one other girl, were the only people out of about 12-15 in the theater laughing; I mean, seriously. It's called "Zack and Miri Make a Porno." What did you expect?)
Medium: (And I realize not everyone will consider this "medium" on the culture scale. I'm just going for balance here, people.) Lastly, we took a trip to Olive Garden, the scene of our first official date some three years prior. (If you wanna get technical, we've been dating a few weeks longer than that, but whatever.) The food was delicious, I got slightly tipsy (geez I love that his car is here and HE can drive us places now...), and the table of four beside us did nothing but stare at us from the time we sat down until the time they left (shortly after we arrived, fortunately). Creepy, but fun!
The rest of this week has been mostly uneventful. Last night we decided to check out the new Guitar Hero: World Tour. Since renting these things is typically such a rip-off, I considered just buying it, but Brian talked me out of it--and I'm so glad. So far it's had long, boring, repetitive songs. This is no doubt due to the fact that songs now have to appeal to the singer and drummer, which pisses me off--if I'd wanted to deal with those things, I'd have bought Rock Band. Sheesh.
And this afternoon we went for a matinee (cheap and uncrowded--I love it!) of Quantum of Solace, which to me was a bit too difficult to follow but still enjoyable. I'll need to rewatch both new Bond movies again at some point. This one was much more intense and high-action than the previous, but I think the fast cuts intended to increase the energy just made scenes a little difficult to follow.
For this weekend, it's gonna be utter laziness and indoorsiness Saturday, followed by a trip to Prattville Sunday for my grandma's 84th birthday.
And now: it's cake-baking time.
