A sad, sad day.

I just made a lengthy post about this on the Playstation 2 forum at Playstation's website, so I'm just going to copy and paste that post to explain. (I should also point out that those forums are where I started making friends online; for at least a year of my life, that was pretty much what I did every night: go hang out and talk to people on the RPG, PSX, or PS2 forum. I was a loser and I'm quite proud of that.) I know at least Katie and Kirkis will appreciate this. The post reads:

I'm aware that no one on these forums has any clue who I am. At the risk of sounding like your grandpa on one of his Glory Days speeches, I should tell you that I used to be kind of a big deal. These forums were mostly my home for quite some time. I mean, I remember when the PS2 board was bright yellow and had a countdown on it, if that tells you anything.

All that to say that when what just happened to me happened, I knew the only place I could go to make myself feel better was here. Official disclaimer: I'm not asking for technical support here, which I suppose I'm not supposed to do. I'm just relatin' the past ten minutes of my life.

Although I used to be very much so all about the video games, a thing called college happened to me and took away all my ~~dignity~~ ~~happiness~~ game-playing time. My PS2 has sat pathetically in my TV stand for quite some time, unused and unloved. I am ashamed of this, and humbly confess my sins to the gaming gods; may they forgive me.

Yet unto me must come some form of punishment, and it did. I received a game for Christmas and felt a nostalgic tug in my heart; I would play again! Today I flipped the switch on the back of my PS2, pressed the eject button eagerly, and watched as the disc tray slowly, awkwardly, painfully attempted to open--with little success. Finally I managed to get it open and put a disc in. I waited... waited... waited. The system was reading... reading... reading. And then, horror of horrors, I saw those three words that all of us, old and new Playstation lovers alike, dread beyond all dread:

"Disc read error."

I tried other discs, to no avail. I pulled the old Nintendo blow-on-anything-and-everything trick; nothing. I banged around on crap, because as my brother pointed out, it's not as if I can break it anymore than it apparently is. All of this in vain, however; my old friend, forsaken and lonely, seems to have abandoned me just as I did him. I hope he's in a better place; I'm not sure if I believe in Heaven, but I like to think there's a special place where kids, teens, and adults have endless time to play with their video game systems, from 8-bit to the 3rd generation consoles of today. And I like to think my PS2 is there, as happy as he was when I first popped SSX into him.

Play on, old friend. I shall miss you dearly.

Definitely a tear-jerker. I can relate, though not with quite as much heartbreak, over my Dreamcast. Luckily, it's a fringe console and it only cost $20 to "reincarnate" (replace is way too cold sounding). But still.. Rough times. Do you have any plans to "reincarnate" your pal?

Also, I'm really bored and just randomly clicking on recent posts that are interesting. So, howdy, I'm Alex, and my blog can speak better for me than I can.

Heck, we've still got one, and it only gets occasional play (when the pre-college kids have friends over). Dunno if I'd be able to hook up a PS3 to our projector if I were to sell the PS2 cheap, though. Should I research?

This is SO sad.... my last console was a PS(1) -- though I think my favorite was the old Sega-Genesis. Tony LaRussa Baseball anyone??

Awww, poor Joie! I haven't asked him, but Eric might let you borrow his PS2 tomorrow night so we can all play your new game. I'll ask him tonight.

No worries! I borrowed my brother's. I've been working on mine; I've gotten it to work twice, but every time I put it back together it stops working again. In any event, we shall play some Guitar Hero.

I think--I desperately hope, at least--I've managed to figure out how to fix it. I've gotten it working twice now, but when I put it back together completely it stops working again. I'm gonna keep mucking around with it and hope I achieve success...

Hi Alex! Y'know, Dreamcast is one of the few systems I never got to experience. But it's always tough to lose an electronic friend. =( I'm still in the process of attempting to resurrect my friend... we'll see if I have to turn to "reincarnation," haha. =)

You're a nerd. End of story. I can't say much I used to play Goldeneye with friends for hours.
